The Citizens Broadband Radio Service (CBRS) is composed of a pair of LTE bands (42 – 3550-3660Mhz & 43 – 3660-3700Mhz) that have been allocated to low power cellular service in the United States. Spectrum allocation is tiered with two relevant tiers for LTE usage. Also defined as Band 48 (3550-37000MHz)
- Priority Access Licenses “PAL” are non-renewable authorization to use a 10 Mhz channel within the 3550-3650 MHz portion of the band in a single census tract for three-years. Each PAL is awarded in a competitive bid process.
- General Authorized Access “GAA” are dynamically allocated 10 Mhz channels within the 3550-3700 Mhz portion of the band that do not conflict with any PAL. Any census tract can have from 80-100 Mhz available for GAA usage depending on assigned PALs.
Spectrum Allocation System “SAS”
What’s different about CBRS is that mobile network infrastructure makes a request for spectrum from a Spectrum Allocation System “SAS” that connects to a database that manages overall licensed usage.
CBRS opens up new business models and will accelerate both indoor and outdoor small cells because the typical concerns of co-channel interference are removed. Enterprise LTE with private mobile core and neutral host LTE are possible in the CBRS service bands.

LTE-Advanced Base Stations are available for CBRS, with Carrier Aggregation and advanced features from LTE Release 13. 2×2 MIMO and 4×4 MIMO options are supported.
CPE devices include Fixed Outdoor, Desktop/Indoor, MiFi and other. Outdoor CPE devices have high gain antennas up to 20dBi with 2×2 MIMO. Upgrades to 4×4 MIMO are supported. Category 4, Category 6 & Category 7 LTE CPEs are available and shipping.
